FALL 2022

The philanthropic support of the community is critical in helping Sarasota Memorial Health Care System maintain its position as a nationally recognized healthcare leader. Recently, the Healthcare Foundation awarded the following grants supporting technology and patient care at SMH.

Supporting comprehensive cancer care. Four grants totaling $222,829 were awarded to the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute: $92,000 will help purchase furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the newly renovated brachytherapy/HDR suite; $70,000 was awarded to help fund an acupuncture pilot program for cancer patients; a grant for $35,829 will be used for the Thrive therapy program, which includes mind and body therapies, recovery exercises, and more; and a $25,000 grant will provide breast health diagnostic services for uninsured or underinsured residents of Sarasota County.

Ensuring women’s reproductive health. With a grant of $116,850, SMH-Sarasota will purchase the Hologic Acessa ProVu® Capital Console used by gynecological surgeons. The new technology will enhance patient care by providing a more thorough and minimally invasive method of treating uterine fibroids.

Upgrading women’s breast health technology. A grant of $112,364 will fund new equipment for the Breast Health program. The equipment includes Hologic’s Brevera® and ATEC® Breast Biopsy Systems. The new system will improve the patient experience by providing physicians with real-time, faster, high-resolution imaging.

Supporting complex spine procedures. A grant of $48,659 will fund the purchase of a new Thompson Spine Retractor Set at SMH-Sarasota. The new equipment will help provide safe and effortless access and surgery on lumbar spine cases and reduce the risk of vascular, nerve, and ureter injury.

Providing for those in need. Three grants totaling $23,000 will help fund care for patients in need. At SMH-Sarasota and SMH-Venice, the indigent clothing fund provides clothing for homeless, trauma, mental health, and geriatric patients so they can leave the hospital with dignity. Funds will also be used to provide uninsured patients with clinic visits and assistance with transportation to and from appointments.

Our donors make it possible for the Healthcare Foundation to provide critical resources that help Sarasota Memorial provide world-class healthcare to all. Your gifts truly make an impact.
