The philanthropic support of the community is critical in helping Sarasota Memorial Health Care System maintain its position as a nationally recognized healthcare leader. The following are some of the Healthcare Foundation grants recently awarded to support technology, patient care, education and research at SMH and in our community.

TECHNOLOGY: $356,080
Two grants were awarded to SMH-Venice to help purchase a Hana orthopedic operating room table, a Trios OR table and instrument trays to expand surgical capabilities, allowing for more advanced orthopedic cases as well as more Vascular and Neurosurgery cases. A grant was awarded to SMH-Sarasota’s Cardiovascular Lab to update a Transcranial Doppler imaging machine to improve imaging quality of brain vessels. Another grant was awarded to the Newtown Internal Medicine Practice to purchase a Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS). POCUS allows for enhanced physical exams and clinical decision-making at the time of care.

PATIENT CARE: $248,631
A grant was awarded to the North Port Emergency Care Center to replace wheelchairs damaged during Hurricane Ian. Another grant was awarded to the health system for the Restore and Empower through Nutrition, Exercise and Wellness (RENEW) program. RENEW is a 10-week program for Sarasota County residents to improve health and well-being with the goal of chronic disease prevention. The Academy at Glengary, a nonprofit offering adults living with mental illness a pathway for wellness and recovery through employment, was also awarded a grant for a strategic engagement initiative to expand their member enrollment.

EDUCATION: $28,350
A grant was awarded to Women and Children’s services at SMH for the Spinning Babies® class. The training will allow labor and delivery staff to assist laboring moms in position changes to help decrease the need for a Cesarean procedure.

RESEARCH: $100,000
A grant was awarded to the SMH Research Institute to help support GU research projects. The award will provide a Research Development Associate and supplies. This grant is made possible by support from the Burzik Foundation.
