Ralph Basile and Karen MacDonald-Basile
FALL 2026
A LEGACY OF SUPPORT ROOTED IN COMMUNITY
Ralph Basile and Karen MacDonald-Basile first visited Sarasota in 2008. As Michigan residents, they were initially drawn by the warmer winters, but they also found a community, rich in culture and philanthropy, that far exceeded their expectations.
Karen’s professional background shaped how quickly the couple put down roots in Sarasota. During a 30-year career in corporate communications for a national developer, each time she relocated, she made it a priority to become immersed in the community. Over a decade ago, she worked on the opening of the Mall at University Town Center, where a colleague, Sally Schule, introduced her to Sarasota Memorial. What began as a professional partnership transformed into a lifelong friendship and enduring commitment to SMH.
“There are very few community hospitals left,” says Ralph, who spent three decades in the medical device industry working with hospitals across the country. “It’s really unique to have a facility so widely supported by the community.”
Their connection to SMH runs deep. Both Ralph and Karen have been patients at SMH, and have seen friends and neighbors rely on its care. Years of involvement as patients, event sponsors, and supporters recently led the Basiles to establish a legacy gift, the natural next chapter nearly two decades in the making.
A recent tour of the new Milman-Kover Cancer Pavilion further supported that philanthropic decision. They noted that every detail had been thoughtfully considered when designing and constructing the facility. Ralph, whose career included sterile device storage and packaging, found himself studying the pavilion’s supply area.
“That is a space that in many facilities is treated as an afterthought. As a donor, you want to know the funds you’re contributing are being well used,” he says. “It is evident that every detail is considered at SMH.”
It’s a message that the Basiles want to share with the community about SMH: excellence isn’t something to seek elsewhere; it’s already here. It lives in the physicians, nurses, and staff whose dedication to their patients is evident in every interaction. In the Basiles’ experience, that dedication is unmistakable, and it’s what makes world-class care a point of pride in our own community.

WRAPPED IN LOVE
When Karen MacDonald-Basile’s mother was hospitalized during what would be her final Christmas, she requested no visitors. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and pulmonary fibrosis had stolen her health and dignity. Karen created something to help her mother feel like herself again: a simple wrap, pinned with a flower highlighting her love for gardening. It lifted her spirit, if only for an afternoon, and that transformation stayed with Karen long after.
After a career in corporate communications, Karen built a company inspired by that moment. Insights from cancer patients, survivors, nurses, and physicians helped shape Wrapped in Love, adaptive, comfortable clothing designed around chemo ports and PICC lines without sacrificing dignity or style. Today, Wrapped in Love products are sold online and in the gift shops at SMH–Sarasota and SMH–Venice. It’s a full-circle moment: profound grief that inspired a business now woven into the fabric of the healthcare system the Basiles have come to call their own.
