INVESTING IN THE FRONT LINE: A HEARTFELT GIFT TO EMERGENCY MEDICINE
For Cheryl Reynolds, M.D., a former emergency medicine physician, the decision to establish an endowment for emergency medicine was shaped by both professional insight and personal experience. After years spent working on the front lines, she understands firsthand the intensity of the Emergency Care Center, where every shift demands physical stamina and emotional resilience. What began as a general interest in supporting ECC caregiver wellness ultimately became a commitment to the whole department that serves as the hospital’s front door.
Emergency medicine teams encounter patients during some of life’s most vulnerable moments. Physicians, nurses, residents and ancillary staff work together in a high-pressure environment that requires extreme focus and compassion. Having lived that reality, Dr. Reynolds wanted to create something lasting—support that would continue strengthening the well-being of those who care for others in an emergency. An endowment offered a meaningful way to ensure long-term resources for the people who carry this responsibility every day.
Personal experiences as a patient and family member further deepened her connection to Sarasota Memorial. After being hospitalized there several years ago, and also seeing loved ones receive excellent care, Dr. Reynolds developed a strong sense of trust for SMH. The hospital’s role as a community-based institution also resonated deeply. In an increasingly complex healthcare environment, investing in SMH felt like an important way to help ensure the hospital’s long-term strength and stability.
“Giving back is both a privilege and a responsibility.”
—CHERYL REYNOLDS, M.D.
Dr. Reynolds’s gift reflects a broader philosophy about philanthropy: Feeling fortunate in life and career, she seeks to support organizations that mirror a strong commitment to community impact. Sarasota Memorial’s dedication to compassionate patient care, education and innovation made it a natural partner.
There is also hope that the Reynolds Emergency Medicine Endowed Fund will inspire others and draw attention to the importance of emergency medicine and residency training programs. Having built a career with the same out-of-town hospital where her residency training began, she understands how these programs help cultivate future physicians and strengthen the healthcare workforce here—today, tomorrow and beyond.
