Donor Support Helps Bring Breakthrough Liver Tumor Treatment to Sarasota Memorial
May 21, 2026
Thanks to philanthropic support, patients at Sarasota Memorial’s Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute now have access to one of the most promising advances in cancer treatment in decades.
The Edison Histotripsy System by HistoSonics is a groundbreaking, non-invasive technology that uses focused ultrasound waves to destroy liver tumors without surgery, incisions, or damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Sarasota Memorial is among a select group of hospitals and cancer centers nationwide to offer the treatment during its early rollout.
Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2023 following more than 20 years of research and clinical trials, histotripsy provides a new option for patients with inoperable or difficult-to-reach liver tumors. The procedure uses high-intensity sound waves to break down cancerous tissue into a liquid that is naturally cleared by the body over time.
“Philanthropy allows Sarasota Memorial to bring innovative technologies like histotripsy to our community,” said Kenneth Meredith, MD, chief of surgical oncology and medical director of the gastrointestinal cancer specialty program at the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute. “For patients who may not be candidates for surgery, this technology offers a safe and effective treatment option close to home.”
Unlike traditional cancer treatments, histotripsy causes minimal side effects and requires no surgical incisions. Most patients return home the same or next day following treatment. Clinical studies have shown the technology to be highly effective at destroying targeted liver tumors, often in a single treatment session.
By investing in advanced technology and innovation, donors help ensure patients throughout our region have access to leading-edge cancer care without leaving the community they call home.
Special thanks to the Frank E. Duckwall Foundation for their grant, to the James and Toni Turner Foundation, David and Marsha Taylor, and all the supporters helping to bring this advanced technology to SMH.
