THE FUTURE OF CANCER CARE: A LEGACY GIFT TO HELP TRAIN TOMORROW’S ONCOLOGY SPECIALISTS
What began as a seasonal escape to Florida in 2006 gradually became something more permanent—and more purposeful. After a successful career as an electrical engineer and ultimately serving as vice president of engineering and chief technical officer for a manufacturing company in Madison, Wisconsin, Jim Doll and his late wife, Barbara, chose Sarasota as their future home. One of the deciding factors was access to strong, community-centered healthcare. Their research into Sarasota Memorial left a lasting impression, shaping not only where they lived but also how they chose to give back.
Jim never set out to create an endowment. Initially, the goal was simple: support an institution he respected and trusted. As he reflected on legacy planning and how their estate could make a meaningful difference, the hospital emerged as the most impactful choice—an organization dedicated to community well-being.
Rather than waiting to be approached, Jim contacted the Healthcare Foundation directly, bringing his financial advisor into the earliest conversations. Through a series of meetings with hospital leaders and clinicians, he gained insight into the system’s most pressing needs and future opportunities. Those discussions ultimately led to the creation of an endowed oncology fellowship, designed to support physicians seeking advanced specialty training after residency and to help strengthen the hospital’s long-term cancer care expertise.
“I view this endowment as a seed— something that will grow over time and inspire others to invest in the future of care.”
—JIM DOLL
Confidence in the Healthcare Foundation’s stewardship was essential. Careful financial transparency and strong investment practices reassured both Jim and his advisor that the gift would be managed responsibly and grow over time. Unlike one-time project funding, the endowment structure ensures lasting impact while allowing flexibility to adapt as medicine evolves—particularly in rapidly changing fields such as oncology.
Today, Jim sees the James and Barbara Doll Endowed Oncology Fellowship Fund not as an endpoint but as a beginning—an investment in innovation, education and compassionate care that will continue benefiting patients and physicians for years.
